Hi Neil, such an interesting read! I will definitely experiment myself with a few of these...

A pity I can't read the whole article from the magazine. And congrats!

Fantastic, let me know how you get on with the experiments!

Nice post, wandering around, following one's nose, one's desires is indeed an excellent way to discover a city.

Thank you! It is something of a lockdown post but hopefully still relevant.

Very interesting Neil, as always. Most Situationists these days are hiding in plain sight. Most probably no social media profile. I cant even find them myself! Is it a coincidence that when Situationism became sexy in academia, mobile phone mapping and google were on the ascendancy. Is that even relevant? In any case keep up the good work...

Thank you! I suspect situationism died after flash mobs.

lol solargeography! Yes this is def a thing. I walk all year round, and I live in a place that's so sweltering in summer that I weave across the street to get in the shady parts and so freezing in winter that I weave into the sunny parts. It's annoying for whoever I walk with but now that there's a term for it I feel vindicated

There are some great dérive experiments here. I particularly like 1,2&4.

A very interesting read…. food for thought 🤔

I love these ideas and will have a go at them as I wander the city. I laughed out loud at the Situationist idea of navigating a city using a map of another city. Will see if I'm brave enough to have a go!

I look forward to hearing how you get on. Sadly, tricky to do with Google Maps!

Google maps is the enemy of urban wandering. It will play no part in my peregrinations!

Cool! I think the topic is waking from its slumber. See the new @Fred Sculthorp in @UnHerd that mentions a psychogeographic tour of Grantham: https://unherd.com/2025/10/how-farage-seduced-grantham/
